PETA Advocates for Retirement of Punxsutawney Phil and Replacement with Giant Coin

  • by

PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, who is currently known for his yearly tradition of predicting the weather in the United States.

A group advocating for animal rights has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. In the letter, the group suggests that instead of using the well-known groundhog for the Groundhog Day holiday on February 2nd, they should use a large coin instead.

PETA expressed that the individual in question is not a professional meteorologist and should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.

At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging holes, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable about weather patterns.

According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by allowing Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This would provide them the opportunity to live without fear, without being handled and spun around, and to participate in natural behaviors that they are currently deprived of in their Plexiglas enclosure.

For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the emergence of a small and furry creature named Phil. This event determines whether Phil sees his shadow, indicating that there will be six more weeks of winter, or if he doesn't see it, indicating an early arrival of spring.

In 1993, a film called Groundhog Day was released, featuring Bill Murray in the role of a weatherman who is frustrated and trapped in a repetitive cycle of time.
