Charles Kelley, a member of the band Lady A, has been open and honest with his fans about his path to sobriety. However, there is one particular event that he has never discussed openly until recently. Kelley has revealed that he came very close to receiving a DUI charge after driving under the influence.
In a recent episode of Elizabeth Vargas' Heart of the Matter podcast, Kelley confesses that when he consumed alcohol, it became a regular habit for him to have "four or five drinks" while playing golf in a single day, and subsequently drive himself back home.
Kelley openly confesses that they were operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Despite the short duration of the drive, there were instances where Kelley realized the extreme foolishness and danger of their actions. Reflecting on the incident the following day, Kelley deeply recognizes the potential harm they could have caused to others or even themselves.
On one specific occasion, Kelley had a close call with being charged with a DUI. It happened during the Christmas season, and he recalls that his wife Cassie and son Ward were away for a few days. This meant that Kelley had the freedom to drink as much as he pleased without any familial responsibilities. He spent a day playing golf and drinking at a nearby bar. As the night came to a close, fellow customers began to express worry about whether Kelley intended to drive home.
"And I thought to myself, 'Oh no, if I don't go back home in my car, my wife will ask me, 'Where is your car?'' Even though I could have picked it up the next morning. She wouldn't have found out because she wasn't there," he explains.
However, with a strong resolve to make his way back home alone, he discreetly left through the rear exit of the bar and departed in his car. Within a brief distance from the bar, he was stopped by the police.
The police officer examined my driver's license and asked, "Are you the person from that band?" I replied, "Yes." Instead of arresting me for driving under the influence, the officer instructed me to park my car and personally drove me home. He didn't issue me a ticket or any penalties. I was amazed and relieved, thinking, "Wow, that was a close call."
Nevertheless, the incident served as a significant reminder, prompting Kelley to realize that he needed to inform his spouse about the situation.
The singer expresses their frustration and exhaustion, stating that they reached a breaking point. They had just been pulled over, and the situation had the potential to drastically impact their life and cause chaos for the band. They acknowledge that it would have resulted in negative publicity, which is something they wanted to avoid.
He made a promise to himself to stop drinking alcohol and struggled for three months to resist the temptation, but unfortunately, he eventually relapsed and fell back into his previous drinking habits. It took another year for him to finally seek help and fully dedicate himself to a sober lifestyle by going to rehab.
Following his rehabilitation, it didn't take much time for Kelly to inform Lady A fans about his struggle with alcohol. The country trio was transparent with their fanbase regarding the postponement of their 2022 Request Line Tour, as they wanted to prioritize Kelley's early stages of sobriety. The decision to be honest about this matter was solely made by Kelley himself. On the other hand, his bandmates, Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood, proposed fabricating alternative explanations for the band's absence from the tour.
Kelley expressed that she was not ashamed of her actions and believed in being honest about them. She acknowledged that what she went through was extremely difficult. Instead of taking the easy way out by continuing to drink and destroy everything, she chose to face her challenges head-on. Kelley mentioned that she felt grateful for the experience, which marked a turning point for her. This led her to decide to share her story, and it has since gained momentum in a positive and beneficial manner.
